♦ About the Dances We Teach

Latin dancing is about having FUN! It's not about the complicated patterns, being the best, or showing off to an audience; it's about feeling the music, letting it move you, and enjoying it with the person you're dancing with!  It can be addictive, a great way to meet new friends, and excellent exercise.  Latin dancing is so much fun that it has transcended the Latin community and is danced around the world.  In fact, phenomenal Latin bands have emerged everywhere from Scotland to Japan!

Salsa as we know it was born in New York in the 1960's.  It's a beautiful blend of many vibrant cultures, fusing Afro-Caribbean rythims (such as Guaguanco Guaracha, Son Montuno, Bomba, Plena, and Aquilnaldos) with North American Jazz.   Some songs can be fairly slow, but salsa is generally fast-paced, energetic, and festive.  Nothing screams "Party time!" like salsa!

Salsa can be danced On1, On2, or On3.  The steps for all three are exactly the same, but the rhythm changes slightly.  We mainly teach On1, also known as LA Style, which is the most popular here in Jax.  On2 is very big in New York and allows slightly more time for spins and tricks.  Dancing On3 feels even slower still and was originally developed for senior citizens.

We also teach a Cuban style called Rueda de Casino Salsa.  Cuban style salsa tends to be much more circular, where LA and NY Styles are both very linear.  Yet another style of salsa is Cumbia, which originated in Columbia.  We touch on the Cumbia basic during our beginner program.
